Tabu Asks: Is Rape a Taboo Subject?
At this year's Slut Walk in Seattle, we asked marchers if rape, both as a subject and a word, is taboo? Hundreds had gathered at Cal Anderson Park for a nation-wide event to protest a police officer in Toronto who claimed a rape survivor had been to blame because she dressed "slutty." The answers of the interviewees give an insight into how our culture treats rape survivors and our own fear of talking about the subject. Please take 3 minutes out of your day to watch this short film!
There is nothing ground breaking about the statements in this film. What is important is that people are talking about rape. We have kept silent for too long as sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends have coped with surviving rape by themselves in a culture that blames the victim, not the crime. When's the last time you talked about rape?
